Cloud Ten branches out with The Genius Club

I could really care less about Cloud Ten's movies, considering that they've made their name on bad Christian apoclaypse movies, in no less than 2(!) franchises that I've been forced to watch at Church from time to time, but they are, to their credit, trying to branch out.  For instance, they are distributing a movie called The Genius Club, which has been languishing without a distributor for some time.  


Why do I care?  Mainly because Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) is in it!  (She's the one on the far left)


Besides that, the premise sounds interesting.  To quote the offical site:
"Seven geniuses, with IQs over 200, are plucked from their lives on Christmas Eve to try to solve the world's problems in one night. If they fail, the world will come to an end. The group attempt to solve world hunger, war, cancer, terrorism, rush hour traffic, jerks, and finally the meaning of life. By morning, the group finds redemption in themselves and quite possible the world."


Not a bad story, and I can see how a Christian message might be in there, even if the synopsis doesn't mention it.  The trailer looks ok too, especially with the ranting, raving and bald Tom Sizemore as the terrorist leader.  Maybe I'll have to give Cloud Ten another chance.

Rosie's Miracle

The Winchester Star has a short article on a short film, Rosie's Miracle.  The film, directed and financed by Connie Lamothe, is about a 7-year-old's quest to cure her dying brother.  Lamothe describes the film as being about a typical blue-collar family, but with a Christian message.  No idea if we'll ever hear more about this, but I'm always a fan of short films, even though they are nearly impossible to see outside festivals.  Good luck to the producers and cast! I don't really care if they label me a 'Jesus Geek'. *cough*

Jon and I are always cracking jokes that we're the greatest Christian movie podcast on the internet, and we're not lying because we're the only one that reviews only Christian movies. We have our niche and it's super-small and comfy. However, there are other good Christian podcasts out there. We've sampled several, but very few seem to 'stick' in our podcast rotation... but I have good news, there's one worth checking out. The Jesus Geeks are a couple of guys from the Pacific Northwest with a love of Christ, Internet memes, films, Sarah Conner, fancy book learning and most importantly, podcasting. Their shows alternate between serious theological or Christian-lifestyle discussions, and ramblings about current news stories, sci-fi, comic books and awful awesome YouTube videos of lost Christian rock bands*(see below). Anyway, give them a listen tell them SuperCandid sent you. They won't know what you're talking about. Maybe tell them John Stamos sent you. That's kind of impressive, right? If John Stamos listened to my show, it would make my day. Pendragon: Sword of His Father

We've been following Pendragon: Sword of His Father for a little while now.  Well, the film's official site reports that a DVD might be available as soon as November, and you can go there to watch the newest trailer for the film.  I've been praying for them to have success in finishing this project, and now I've started praying that it will be as good a movie as it looks like it could be! In the meantime, The River Bend Telegraph has an interview with filmmaker Chad Burns, about the challenges of making a low-budget epic film.  It is an interesting interview, and it further piques my interest in this movie.  I can't wait! Sunday School Musical

Wow.  I never thought I would see the day.  But it happened.

Someone made Sunday School Musical.

There are no words, only the sound of cash registers ringing in Christian bookstores across the nation.

At least, that's what they are hoping I guess.

I have no idea if this movie is any good, but it is certainly lacking in the originality department.  I suppose it could be very well done and have a completly unique take on the whole thing, and, in concept, I think that a Christian musical is a great idea.

But the title, and packaging, and everything else about this, just screams rip-off cash-in by greedy opportunists who smell money.

This is not what the Christian movie industry needs if it wants to be taken seriously by Christians or anyone else.

Just look at this. Look at it!

Chad Allen in Save Me

Chad Allen, the openly gay actor who was excellent in dual roles in End of the Spear (our review), has had a new film in the works for some time.  Entitled Save Me, it is about the struggle of a gay man within the Church in the US.  The film is not yet released, but it has been screening at number of film festivals, including Sundance way back in January 2007.  The film's official site has a trailer, and Allen himself recently gave an interesting interview on the film at Christianity Today.  It looks like an interesting, and controversial movie, and Allen's interview raises some hot-button issues itself.   (CT Interview) (Story found by me @ Metro Weekly) Subscribe to the SuperCandid Podcast, the number 1 podcast for Christian movies Subscribe to the SuperCandid Blog Save This Page

What May Come (Come What May)

You might recall that the last time we mentioned the Christian-college set anti-abortion courtroom drama, Come What May, it as listed as a Spring 2008 release.


Well, the filmmaker some guy is saying the film could influence the Presidential elections in November.  


Earned Media is running a story from Christian Newswire that features this quote:


"That's why this independent film made in Purcellville, Virginia (far from Hollywood) could be used to positively affect the elections for pro-life candidates." adds Welty. "There is nothing from the pro-choice side that is remotely as persuasive."


This Welty person is mentioned elsewhere in the article as Dean Welty, Director of the Valley Family Forum, and I don't know if he has anything to do with the movie or not.  He seems like a Christian culture activist, along the lines of James Dobson or Doug Phillips.  


All I do know is that the film's official site has nothing about a release date, although the soundtrack is supposedly going to be available in "Early September."  Hard to know how a film that is nearly impossible to see will impact elections, but maybe it will hit on DVD by then.  


Come on Advent Media Group!   We want a DVD release!

Donald Miller at the Democratic Convention

You may wonder what politics has to do with Christian movies.  Well, it's simple.  Donald Miller, who's book Blue Like Jazz is being developed into one of the most hotly anticipated movies that we at the SuperCandid podcast have heard about, delivered the closing prayer at the opening night of the Democratic Convention.  Miller has also posted some snide humorous responses to those strangely personalized emails that political candidates have been sending out this year.  I have to tell you, he's not wrong to think it is strange when someone running for President seems to be sending you emails that begin with lines like:  "Hey Jon, I was just clipping my cuticles this morning and I thought of how much you've helped our cause."  Sometimes the attempt to connect is a little too much. Anyway, the bad news about Don Miller & Blue Like Jazz is that its fallen victim to the Steve Taylor curse.  Steve Taylor seems to love God quite a bit, but God must not love him back that much.  Just kidding, but once again a Steve Taylor project has fallen on hard times.  Blue Like Jazz is on indefinite hold until Taylor and his team can secure more funding.  Considering how the book was a runaway hit with hip young Christian men, it should be easy, but also considering that Taylor says he doesn't want it to play only to the typical Christian film audience, maybe the money is harder to get.  Personally I'm glad that Taylor is holding out for enough money to make the film as good as it can be, but I pray that he has success and gets it made soon.  I'm dying to see the next Steve Taylor project.  If it's half as good as The Second Chance then it'll be a shoe-in for Christian movie of the year! Bringing Up Bobby

I recieved an email last week from the producers of a new indepenant Christian movie.  I really love it when someone does the hard work for me, and all I have to do is throw this up onto the website.  Thanks!

The movie is Bringing Up Bobby, about a teenager who is challenged by his older brother to figure out what he believes about his life, his family, and God.  The trailer is pretty non-existant, only giving a hint of hijinks that are sure to ensue, but even this short clip does give me a good family comedy vibe, kind of like the things that made me want to see Will Ferrall's Stepbrothers, minus the fact that it looked awful.  Probably too soon to say on this one, but...

But I also watched the trailer for the first film from filmmakers Nick and Chris Staron, Between the Walls, and it looks really good.  I also caught a couple of their "Pint Size Parables," a series of Christian flash animations, and they aren't bad at all.  I'm looking forward to seeing how this movie turns out.
