Slides from the San Antonio Independant Christian Film Festival

 If you're like me, you might have read some coverage of the San Antonino Independent Christian Film Festival (like the really good coverage on Rebelution.com), and wished that you could have seen some of those talks.

Well, now you can have the next best things.  First, for those who want the visual aids, you can buy the slides from 7 of the lectures given at the Film Academy portion of the SAICFF.  If you're interested in learning about making your own independent films, or ff you really love Powerpoint, this is the thing for you. 

Even better, you can buy a 14(!) CD set of talks and performances from the 2009 SAICFF.  I balked at the $55 price tag, but for 14 CDs thats only about 4 a cd, and if each CD is full that's 14 hours of material.  When I first looked at this there was no listing of the content, but I sent them an email and I like to think that I caused them to post the list.  But, as we all know, correlation does not imply causation.  It could just be a conincidence.

Comprehensive coverage on the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival

C.S. Don't download The Widow's Might from Behemoth yet! Or maybe you should...

We've just received word that you should hold off on downloading The Widow's Might from behemoth.com!  Remember it, and several other finalists in the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival are available for download from the site for a modest price.  However, we've received word from John Moore, the newly rich writer /director / actor of The Widow's Might, that the version of the movie which is available at Behemoth is an old version that does not reflect the finished product.  

While this might be a fascinating look at the filmmaking process, he has said that we should hold off on reviewing it until we get the finished movie. Moore says that hopefully Behemoth should have the finished version up in a week or so.  I say that film students and wanna-be filmmakers should probably snap it up now, so that they can compare it to the finished version.  Behemoth allows you to re-download movies you've purchased at no extra charge, so you should be able to get them both once the final version is available.

It's sure not a lamp shaped like a leg: The Widow's Might Wins Major Award!

A 19-year-old filmmaker beat out the makers of Fireproof  and Expelled  to win the best of festival prize at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival .  This is the prize that comes with $101,000 of cool, hard cash.  


The winner is the movie that we've talked about once or twice, The Widow's Might .  Now that its available for download and has won a major prize, we'll have to review it soon.  


The Rebelution Blog reports the full list of winners, scooping the film festival itself, which has nothing on their own web page yet, although the parent organization of the film festival, Doug Phillip's Vision Forum, does have a press release .  I'm late myself, and I've at least got the excuse of playing war with the national guard all weekend!  

All the rest of the categories are listed below.  Interestingly, the "Best Commercial Advertisement" and "Best Promotional Material" winners are not listed on either list of awardees.

Best Trailer:  Changing Lives  (this is apparently a "trailer" for the film festival itself, seems like a good way to get free advertising.  Anyway, you can watch it here , and it was made by Jeremiah Warren, who also worked on The Widow's Might 
Young Filmmakers:  A Journey of Hope
Best Treatment:  Sand Town (this is not a film, but an idea in the pre-script stage)
Best Creation Film:  Noah's Ark
Best Biblical Family Film:  Binding Faith
Best Short Film:  Prodigal Trilogy
Best Original Score:  The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry  (not to be confused with The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey )
Audience Choice:  The Widow's Might 
Best Documentary:  The Terry Schiavo Story (just when you thought CNN/MSNBC/FOX had wrung all there was out of that story.  But at least it beat Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed )
Best Feature Film:  Fireproof  (an interesting split with The Widow's Might .  Fireproof certainly doesn't need the money...)

Oh, and I should correct an earlier mistake.  The Widow's Might is available on DVD, in a limited edition run, for $20.

Downloadable Christian Movies

The San Antonino Independant Christian Film Festival has facilitated some of their finalists becoming available for download through Behometh.com.  Not all the finalists are there; notably Fireproof & Expelled, the big-shots of the festival, are absent.  The short films are only $1.95, hour-longs are about $4.95, and features are $9.95.  That's a substantial savings!  Pendragon: Sword of His Father is going for $22.95 on DVD.  But some ones that I've been looking forward to are there;

2009 Christian Filmmakers Academy kicks off today

This week over 700 students will be attending the Christian Filmmaker's Academy at Doug Phillip's Vision Forum-run San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival.

These filmmakers will be learning all sorts of things about the movie business and the art of movie-making, but what I'm sure many of them really want to know is:  how do we wing $101,000 for our home-made movie?

That answer will be given later this week when the Film Festival awards its grand prize.  We already covered the nominees; who's your money on?  Lets hear your predictions!

My money is on Fireproof , if only because its the Titanic of Independent Christian Films.  It's already made gobs of money, a bunch of awards would be the perfect companion.

Finalists for San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival $100k prize

The finalists for the big prize at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival's have been announced, and some of them will be familiar to SuperCandid readers.

Feature film finalists are:
Fireproof 
Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed 
Pendragon, Sword of His Father 
Pilgrim's Progress: Journey to Heaven
The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry
The Sound of a Dirt Road
Throw a Few Things on the Ground
The Widow's Might 


My money's on Fireproof, the Titanic of Christian movies.  If Expelled wins, the SAICFF should be forced to shut down.

The semi-finalists have also been announced in other categories, including documentary(for which, thankfully, Expelled is not nominated), short films(including Dialtone ), and Young Filmmakers.

Hopefully Fireproof wins so that the Kendricks get an extra $101,000 for their next movie.  We want more action scenes!

KingDomWood Christian Film Festival

There's another Christian Film Festival on the horizon.  This October, now that the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival has moved to January(to compete with Sundance?), Christian filmmakers can enter their works in the KingDomWood  Christian Film Festival in Atlanta, GA.  Actually, it looks like it will be held in a suburb of Atlanta known as Lithonia, GA.  

I'd love to be able to go to this, but I think almost all my money is going to have to be saved to go the SAICFF this next year.  We'll see though.    And we'll keep you posted on any future developments of the KingDomWood Christian Film Festival.
