Episode Thirty Seven (37) - Fireproof

I find it ironic that our review of Fireproof is our 37th episode.  See Clerks if you don't get it.

Anyway, this week we have a special guest reviewer, my wife Nicole.  She shares her unique prespective on the latest film from the Kendrick brothers and Sherwood Studios.
Show Notes  --
Intro Music  -- "We Didn't Start the Fire," as made famous by Billy Joel, performed by Bob Williams and his Orchestra.
Outro Music --"We Didn't Start the Fire," performed by The Hoosiers.

EDIT- Sorry, I jumped the gun and posted this while our podcast host was still "processing," and apparently it never finished.  So, if you check your favorite podcast catcher this morning, it should be there now.

The Impostor may be an Impostor of itself, and prayers for Kevin Max

Some big, wild & crazy news about Kevin Max, star of Imposter, the forthcoming Christian movie.  Lots of info on his myspace blog recently.

First, and most importantly, Max was in a car accident on 27 October.  Good news is that he is ok, he says just minor bumps & bruises.  Hopefully nothing more serious than he is letting on.

Second, he has some thoughts on his starring role in The Impostor.  Apparently, he was not entierely pleased with how it turned out.  I hope that the movie is good, but I am fearful from reading this that it was hamstrung in an attempt to avoid alienating the so-called "Christian audience."  We noted in our review of Hidden Secrets  that it suffered from attempts to conform to the conventions of "Christian films," so I hope this one avoids that.  Time will tell.

Finally, I just wanted to note that Max is a fan of The Road & The Wrestler , two things that I am also really excited about.  The Road is the Cormac McCarthy post-apoclayptic novel, which I found to be greatly interesting and moving.  It is being made into a movie by director John Hilicoat, who made the wonderful and apocalyptic-toned Australian western The Proposition.  Nick Cave, one of my favorite musicians, wrote The Proposition and is returning to work with Hilicoat on the music for The Road.  The Wrestler is another movie, this time a new feature by Darren Aronofsky, the director of the brilliant Requiem for  Dream The Fountain.  If those two movies aren't enough to recommend his next film for you, then you should not call yourself a movie fan.

Anyway, The Imposter hits DVD on January 4th , and if you pre-order you can get it by New Year's Eve.  I guess we'll know then what Max was unhappy with.

Come What May streaming free until Oct. 29

Come What May , the movie produced by Advent Film Group about a Patrick Henry College law school competition, is being presented for free, for a limited time, on GodTube.

For a long time the producers of this movie have been promoting it as timely in this Presidential election season, but I had questioned this in the past as it was not scheduled to be widely available until long after Nov. 4.

That is all fixed now, and it seems that this is a great way for them to get the word out about their movie.  I've already purchased a special "preview edition" DVD, so we should be reviewing it ourselves in the near future.  Until then, check it out for free from now until Oct. 29th.  What's the worst that can happen with a free movie?

Thanks to awakenpictures for the tip, which beat out the official Advent Film Group Mailing list by over 3 days.

A Life

A new Christian movie called A Life is coming soon on DVD.

Don't know much about this movie besides the trailer, but it is coming on DVD December 8.  Based on the trailer, it is hard to make a good guess on what the movie is like.  Defiantly a tear jerker, but the trailer has very little actual footage, with a lot of text cards and Bible verses instead of scenes from the film.  We'll see I'm sure.

The Bible: Illuminated now in English

The Bible Illumianted The Book: New Testament is now available in English.  We spoke about this a long time ago , when it was only available in Swedish, but you can go ahead pre-order the English version from Amazon now.

Between this and St. John's Bible , you can have two very different but both very modern version of the Bible that are as beautiful to look at as they are to read.

Christmas is right around the corner, and this would be a great gift for any art fans on your list.

Wesley delayed until 2009

The movie Wesley , based on the life of John Wesley, has been pushed back to 2009.

Previously this film was scheduled to be released on Nov. 15, 2008.

No word on the specifics of why this was delayed, but speculation on The Christian Post links it to a crowded Christian movie market (Fireproof , Billy: The Early Years and House  are all out or will be out in the near future).  I'd like to see a bit more marketing from the producers, as this is one of the more obscure Christian movies in the pipeline right now.

Fireproof drops from #8 to #10

Fireproof dropped from #8 last weekend to #11 this weekend, dropping from $4,680 per theater to $3,640 per theater.   Fireproof is still successful, making $3.1 million this past weekend, taking it to a total gross of $16.9 million so far.  Still quite good for a $500,000 budgeted film. Interestingly, Fireproof still beat Religulous, the Bill Maher anti-religion screed, but Religulous took in more money per theater for the second week in a row. It remains to be seen if Fireproof has the long lasting success of Facing the Giants, or if it made most of its money in the opening weeks. Edit: in the time between I wrote this and published it, boxofficemojo updated their figures to put fireproof back in the top 10 at #10. Episode Thirty Five - Bella

We're finally back! (in more ways than one... lousy Libsyn...) This week we review 'Bella', a Mexican made independent film about life and love and family and all that. Tony Bennett called it 'the best film of 2007', because you all know what an outstanding film critic Tony Bennett is and all... Despite that, we still give it an outstanding review (spoiler!). Music, news, and more. Direct Download HERE. Save Me Used to be Funny

Save Me , starring End of The Spear 's Chad Allen, has been recieving positive write-ups in many Christian publications.  It won't be out on DVD until January 20, 2009, but it has been getting interesting articles, like this one in the San Francisco Bay Times.  This particular article touches on how the film's story changed from a comedy to a drama over the course of the long road from script to screen.   It is interesting stuff, particularly for the note on the explicit sex scene that may turn off some Christian viewers.

Personally, I thought Allen was excellent in End of the Spear , and I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with this role.

House has a trailer!

There is finally a trailer out for House, the Frank Peretti/Ted Dekkar movie that has been delayed for over a year.  Apparently the filmmakers aren't happy with their R-rating , which means that a lot of youth groups and Christian Colleges not only won't see the movie, they'll condemn it was Satanic.

Just kidding.

Not really.   I used to go to one of those youth groups.  But, I would guess that they will make an exception for this, just as everyone did for The Passion.

As far as the trailer goes, I think it looks pretty good.  It defiantly has that Texas Chainsaw Massacre vibe, with a bit of the "I'll force you to kill strangers" thing that has made Saw so popular.  It does seem to have some big effects moments, so we'll see if that was the reason for the delay.

Enjoy the trailer(oh, and for a bonus, compare it in scariness to the ad for The Happening that is currently playing in front of it):
