I dare you to Love

I'm going to be up late tonight doing some work, so I'll be updating blog posts every time I feel burned out and need a break. Which means, lots of posts over the next few days. I'm going to try to clear out the back-log of written but unposted stories I have so that I can get more up-to-date stuff next week. Oh, and if anyone didn't know, the reason the posts dropped off so preciptiously was/is because my computer was stolen. I'm using a borrowed one for now, until my insurance comes through and I can replace it. Speaking of, in a totally almost legitimate news item, The Love Dare is available for the Kindle. If you don't know, the Kindle is just about the bee's knees, or, as Jeff Bezos says, the greatest literary invention since the printing press. Really. The Kindle and Gutenberg. Like peas in a pod. I'll buy it. I love my Kindle, even if I don't read it very often. A lot of that is due to the fact that I already have a HUGE shelf of books I haven't read. You know, old fashioned, dead trees and such. So a little device with infinitely more books I haven't read doesn't get a lot of play. But, getting back to the news, my birthday is coming up in April, and if someone wanted to gift me The Love Dare for the Kindle as a birthday gift, I promise you'll have a review. I might even blog about going through the book, complete with me waving a baseball bat at the neighbors, just like Kirk Cameron. You can find my Amazon info here. Or, if you don't have a lot of extra cash laying around to buy stuff for random bloggers who bad mouth all your favorite Christian movies, just click on our Amazon, iTunes, Netflix or Christian Cinema links. Maybe you're buying stuff anyway; this won't cost you anything, and I pledge, on behalf of Don, who actually gets the money, to use the next $9 we get to buy The Love Dare on the Kindle. Until then, enjoy these two sets of funny pictures.

Get waaaaaay behind the scenes of Fireproof

Here's an interesting piece of movie merchandise:  a CD-ROM full of the production files from Fireproof , Facing the Giants  and Flywheel .  Billed as a "production file," the CD includes schedules, legal waivers, interviews, photographs, call sheets, production log, prayer strategy.  It even has some tips on acting if you have to star in the movie yourself!
This is certainly a unique item, since this is the sort of information that most movie producers guard as state secrets.  Don't expect something like this to ever come out for The Dark Knight , but if you're looking at making your own movies, this will probably have lots of good information and put some reality into your dreams.  Its not all hard truths though; remember, as hard as it might seem, this CD is being put out by a group that made it!  They started with a totally self-financed indie, and now they have produced the #5 Grossing Christian Movie of all time!

After the Fire(proof)

Focus on the Family has a great article about the potential future for Sherwood Pictures and the Kendrick brothers.  Remember, Fireproof is now available on DVD , so the timing of the article is perfect.

Focus on the Family's blog CitizenLink.com (or .org I guess) has the story by Dale Buss.  It hints at answers to a couple of things we've been wondering.  Like, how much of the money from their movies does Sherwood Pictures really get back?  The article mentions that "Fireproof ’s proceeds could allow the church to finish construction of an 82-acre, $3.5 million sports park in Albany."  If a $32 1/2 million profitting movie can only "finish" a $3.5 million sports park, where does the rest go?  Future movie projects, I hope.

Or how does Fireproof's success compare to other Christian movies?  That one's easy.  The article says its in the top 5, but fails to give details.  Never fear, SuperCandid is here!  According to Box Office Mojo , the top 5 grossing Christian movies are:

1.  The Passion   $370 million
2.  The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe $291 million
3.  Prince Caspian $141 million
4.  The Nativity Story   $37 million
5.  Fireproof  $33 million

I guess even $141 million isn't enough for Disney to justify the cost of a 3rd Narnia movie, but I'm going to count out #2 & #3, since the recent Narnia movies are hardly Christian in content, only marketing.  Under my revised numbers, that moves Fireproof  to #3, followed by Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie and One Night with the King .  I am deeply saddened that Fireproof  couldn't pull in enough to out-pace The Nativity Story , but considering The Nativity Story  had a $32 million budget and Fireproof  had a $500,000 budget, I  guess they trump them anyway.

Also, the Kendricks hint at a possible next project, set in "pre-Reformation Europe."  They say it might need a $20-30 million budget to film, but considering how far they stretched $500,000, I'm sure they'll get their money's worth.
