Episode Thirty Eight (38) - The Christmas Card

Editor's Note:  We're re-posting our Christmas episodes that were lost when Podango went under just after Christmas day.  This is the first of several re-posts.  Enjoy!   Originally Posted on November 12, 2008  With the sun in the sky and shorts on our legs, we're recording our first Christmas episode of the year... In a nutshell, a nice lady mails Christmas cards to anonymous troops in Afghanistan, anonymous troop loves card and visits the church he heard about in the card, Ed Asner intervenes and romance ensues. It's better than it sounds, I promise. For more empty promises, download the episode via iTunes or whatever or right here. After the Fire(proof)

Focus on the Family has a great article about the potential future for Sherwood Pictures and the Kendrick brothers.  Remember, Fireproof is now available on DVD , so the timing of the article is perfect.

Focus on the Family's blog CitizenLink.com (or .org I guess) has the story by Dale Buss.  It hints at answers to a couple of things we've been wondering.  Like, how much of the money from their movies does Sherwood Pictures really get back?  The article mentions that "Fireproof ’s proceeds could allow the church to finish construction of an 82-acre, $3.5 million sports park in Albany."  If a $32 1/2 million profitting movie can only "finish" a $3.5 million sports park, where does the rest go?  Future movie projects, I hope.

Or how does Fireproof's success compare to other Christian movies?  That one's easy.  The article says its in the top 5, but fails to give details.  Never fear, SuperCandid is here!  According to Box Office Mojo , the top 5 grossing Christian movies are:

1.  The Passion   $370 million
2.  The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe $291 million
3.  Prince Caspian $141 million
4.  The Nativity Story   $37 million
5.  Fireproof  $33 million

I guess even $141 million isn't enough for Disney to justify the cost of a 3rd Narnia movie, but I'm going to count out #2 & #3, since the recent Narnia movies are hardly Christian in content, only marketing.  Under my revised numbers, that moves Fireproof  to #3, followed by Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie and One Night with the King .  I am deeply saddened that Fireproof  couldn't pull in enough to out-pace The Nativity Story , but considering The Nativity Story  had a $32 million budget and Fireproof  had a $500,000 budget, I  guess they trump them anyway.

Also, the Kendricks hint at a possible next project, set in "pre-Reformation Europe."  They say it might need a $20-30 million budget to film, but considering how far they stretched $500,000, I'm sure they'll get their money's worth.

The Widow's Might available in Blu-Ray.

While some other Christian movies have come out in high definition (ie. Evan Almighty HD-DVD), this is the first Christian movie I can find that is available on Blu-Ray, unless you count The Chronicles of Narnia movies, which, given the Jesus-Lion's astonishing non-Jesusness, I don't.
You can get the Blu-Ray, which, following after Disney's brilliant marketing strategy with Sleeping Beauty, includes a complimentary copy on good old DVD.  Which means you might as well buy the Blu-Ray, even if you don't have a player yet.  You get the film on regular DVD for now, and you're ready to enjoy it in high definition when you eventually upgrade.

An interview with the filmmakers of "The Widow's Might"

I'm working on our own interview with John Moore, director and star of The Widow's Might, but in the meantime you can enjoy an interview with Mr. Moore and his fellow filmmaker David Heustis conducted on Generations with Vision , a home-school oriented radio program.

The interview is interesting, and Moore talks at length about the Christian principles that helped them shape the story of The Widow's Might .  I'll highlight some interesting points he mentions to whet your appetite:

  • He founded his production company with David Heustis when he was 13 and Heustis was 14.
  • Their original budget estimate was $250,000, but he mentions that the film ended up coming in well under budget.
  • Their money was primarily raised from local businesses based on the strength of the script.
  • They are exploring different distribution options now.
  • The $101,000 prize from SAICFF went back to the investors.

Fireproof in 60 Seconds!

fireproofbannerFireproof  has posted a 60 second version of the movie on their website.  It is, in many ways, awesome.  I'm even tempted to say that it highlights the best parts of the movie (Kirk Cameron, the action scenes), while leaving out the worst (the comic relief).  It is great.  I guess it will be on the DVD that's coming out soon, so maybe someone will rip it and post it online after that.

It should be the first video that plays on the site, but if not then it is the one on the far right of their videos on the front page.  You may have to enter an email to view it, but feel free to put in supercandid at gmail dot com if you don't want to subscribe.

I wish there was a way to embed this video here.  I truly do.  But I can't.  The fact that I can't is a huge missed publicity stunt on the producers part.  The best I can do is this banner.

Wall Street Journal: What Christians Watch

Dutiful listener & reader Adrian forwards this article from the Wall Street Journal, entitled "What Christians Watch." It has a good summary of the place of Fireproof (our coverage and our review ) in the larger scope of the "Christian" movie market, but I take issue with a couple of points. The mention of the failure of Billy: The Early Years fails to include the fact that Billy: The Early Years was hurt by a lack of publicity of any kind. The article mentions the huge push that Fireproof got, but fails to mention that Billy: The Early Years , and the recently released T.D. Jakes movie Not Easily Broken , got almost nothing. No movie, no matter how good, is going to make much money at theaters if it doesn't gets lots of publicity. It should be noted that the work that Provident Films did to promote Fireproof was much more successful than their efforts on the latest Veggie-Tales (our coverage) movie. When talking about what makes certain movies a success and others failures, Fireproof succeeds not because, as the article states, it is an "altar call" movie. Rather, Fireproof addresses serious issues that many people, including Christians, can relate to. In fact, the "altar call" aspect of Fireproof is so minor that I felt it was only included so that the hard-core Christian audience would accept the film. The Kendricks understand that their core audience does not like ambigious endings, which is why excellent films like Second Chance (our coverage) often get over-looked. They are, however, good enough filmmakers not to make this the be all and end all of the film. Cameron's conversion comes at the midway point of the story, and it doesn't solve all his problems at once. In this way the film actually offers a much more nuanced and mature view of Christianity than Facing the Giants (our coverage) . The article also fails to mention that aside from the personal life of its star, The Nativity Story (review ) was a boring movie that brought very little new or interesting things to a story that everybody knows. Its bad filmmaking is what really killed it, and, long after Keisha Castle-Hughes is forgotten, that is what will keep it from being a "Christmas Classic" like its makers hoped it would be. However, this may be the right analysis of End of the Spear (review) . For such an excellent movie to be largely ignored speaks to the prejudice that hampers many conservative Christians. The movie is among the finest we've ever reviewed, and its stars sexuality does nothing to diminish his powerful portrayal of such a hero of faith. The movie does bring up some more ambiguous points that may also work to keep it from becoming a true Christian classic. The article also fails to mention that for all their bad-effects, the Left Behind (coverage ) are bionafied Christian movie successes and continue to be popular, as evidenced by 2 sequels. Finally, Joe Eszterhas is quoted saying "And we live in an era of remakes, but 'Ben Hur' and 'The Ten Commandments' aren't being remade. Imagine the parting of the Red Sea with digital effects!" Well, Mr. Eszterhas, I don't have to imagine. I could watch Ben Kingsley part the Red Sea with digital effects in 1996's Moses , I could watch Dougray Scott do it in 2006's The Ten Commandments or I could watch Christian Slater's animated visage do in in 2007's The Ten Commandments (our coverage of the Ten Commandments frenzy here) . Hardly a shortage of re-makes here. Or what about the animated re-make of Ben-Hur , starring Chuck himself reprising his second most famous role? Opening Moments of "The Widow's Might"

I was debating posting this, but then I watched it and really like it!  It is the first few minutes of The Widow's Might , mostly the opening credits.  The footage looks and sounds great, and it does reveal a few bits about the movie that other trailers have only hinted at.  It also has a pretty big spoiler for the "type" of movie that The Widow's Might.  Click and see...

Episode Forty Two (42) - Come What May

Our latest episode is now available!

In celebration of today's Presidential Inauguration, we review the movie that was hyped to "change the election."

We're talking, of course, about Come What May , the first movie from Advent Film Group.  This is the movie we reported on last week when they signed a distribution deal with Sony, so look for it on store shelves soon.

We bring our usual SuperCandid look at this film, and we're not afraid to hold it up to another independent Christian film that Sony picked up for distribution, one that later became a huge hit.  Tune in to find out which one!

----------------------SHOW NOTES---------------------------

Our music this week is "Sexx Laws" by Beck.

Comprehensive coverage on the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival

C.S. Hayden has posted a fairly comphrensive report on the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival , complete with lots of pretty pictures.  Its almost like being at the festival itself, which seems to have a high than usual (for film festivals) amount of babies and kilts on the stage.  You can see a lot of the faces behind some of your favorite Christian movies and get a taste of the experience:

Part 1:  Speakers

Part 2:  Friends

Part 3:  Movie Makers, Presenters and other Notables

Don't download The Widow's Might from Behemoth yet! Or maybe you should...

We've just received word that you should hold off on downloading The Widow's Might from behemoth.com!  Remember it, and several other finalists in the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival are available for download from the site for a modest price.  However, we've received word from John Moore, the newly rich writer /director / actor of The Widow's Might, that the version of the movie which is available at Behemoth is an old version that does not reflect the finished product.

While this might be a fascinating look at the filmmaking process, he has said that we should hold off on reviewing it until we get the finished movie. Moore says that hopefully Behemoth should have the finished version up in a week or so.  I say that film students and wanna-be filmmakers should probably snap it up now, so that they can compare it to the finished version.  Behemoth allows you to re-download movies you've purchased at no extra charge, so you should be able to get them both once the final version is available.

Come What May signs with Sony!

Another day, another tip from Awaken Pictures! I should just give him posting access.  (Seriously, if you're interested, drop me a line) Today's tip is that Come What May , which is our next movie up for review and which I just watched last night, has been picked up for distribution by Sony Pictures!  Congratulations to Advent Film Group and the makers of Come What May .  Sony, you may recall, distributed Facing the Giants and Fireproof , so they are no strangers to the Christian film market.  I think its safe to say that Come What May  will be showing up in your neighborhood Christian bookstore and favorite DVD retailers soon.

Heavenly Harmony Gold Update!

I received an email from Cloud9 Games today, with a couple of quick updates and corrections to our recent article on Heavenly Harmony Gold.

1.  Since the game was originally built as a karaoke game, only the lead singer is depicted in the graphics.  The next iteration of the game will feature a full band.

2.  There are 12 different performance venues to play in.

3.  It is compatible with the Guitar Praise controller!

4.  There are no plans for a Mac version at this time.

It's sure not a lamp shaped like a leg: The Widow's Might Wins Major Award!

A 19-year-old filmmaker beat out the makers of Fireproof  and Expelled  to win the best of festival prize at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival .  This is the prize that comes with $101,000 of cool, hard cash.

The winner is the movie that we've talked about once or twice, The Widow's Might .  Now that its available for download and has won a major prize, we'll have to review it soon.

The Rebelution Blog reports the full list of winners, scooping the film festival itself, which has nothing on their own web page yet, although the parent organization of the film festival, Doug Phillip's Vision Forum, does have a press release .  I'm late myself, and I've at least got the excuse of playing war with the national guard all weekend!

All the rest of the categories are listed below.  Interestingly, the "Best Commercial Advertisement" and "Best Promotional Material" winners are not listed on either list of awardees.

Best Trailer:  Changing Lives  (this is apparently a "trailer" for the film festival itself, seems like a good way to get free advertising.  Anyway, you can watch it here , and it was made by Jeremiah Warren, who also worked on The Widow's Might
Young Filmmakers:  A Journey of Hope
Best Treatment:  Sand Town (this is not a film, but an idea in the pre-script stage)
Best Creation Film:  Noah's Ark
Best Biblical Family Film:  Binding Faith
Best Short Film:  Prodigal Trilogy
Best Original Score:  The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry  (not to be confused with The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey )
Audience Choice:  The Widow's Might
Best Documentary:  The Terry Schiavo Story (just when you thought CNN/MSNBC/FOX had wrung all there was out of that story.  But at least it beat Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed )
Best Feature Film:  Fireproof  (an interesting split with The Widow's Might .  Fireproof certainly doesn't need the money...)

Oh, and I should correct an earlier mistake.  The Widow's Might is available on DVD, in a limited edition run, for $20.

(Thanks to Awaken Pictures for the head's up on this story!)

Downloadable Christian Movies

The San Antonino Independant Christian Film Festival has facilitated some of their finalists becoming available for download through Behometh.com.  Not all the finalists are there; notably Fireproof & Expelled, the big-shots of the festival, are absent.  The short films are only $1.95, hour-longs are about $4.95, and features are $9.95.  That's a substantial savings!  Pendragon: Sword of His Father is going for $22.95 on DVD.  But some ones that I've been looking forward to are there;

Pendragon: Sword of His Father (our coverage)
The Widow's Might (our coverage) (Which, it should be noted, is not yet available on DVD!)
Dialtone (our coverage)

As well as some others that sound interesting:
Throw a Few Things on the Ground(documentary about West Africa)
The Sound of A Dirt Road (a Texas love story)
Adventures Tails: Sugar (a short adventure film starring a bunch of dogs)
Coppelius (short film about rebels and an Empire, don't know anything more)
The Rock from Which We Are Hewn (documentary about home-schooling)
Animals in the Bible (self-explanitory documentary, I'm interested in what kind of point they actually make)

SuperCandid Games: Heavenly Harmony Gold totally PWNS Guitar Praise: Solid Rock

Remember Guitar Praise: Solid Rock ?  Well, fugedabout!

In the battle for Christian computer games inspired by hit video games like Rock Band & Guitar Hero , Heavenly Harmony Gold by Cloud9 Games is clearly ahead in terms of features!

Feature 1:
6 players simultaneously!  Not even Rock Band manages this!  4 singers at one time!  That''s 'Bear is driving car' crazy!

Feature 2:
Full compatibility with xbox 360 and Playstation 3 USB-based Guitar Hero and Rock Band controllers! No need to have any extra fake guitars hanging around your house!

Feature 3:
Actual graphics of singers and a performance venue!  Click here for video!

Feature 4:
Only $49.95!  & That includes a USB microphone!  Plus free upgrades for owners of the original Heavenly Harmony!

The only real advantages that Guitar Praise: Solid Rock brings are a bigger song list(but see below), and an OS X version of the game.  The Guitar Praise: Solid Rock bundled controller is wireless, but Heavenly Harmony Gold can use the wireless Guitar Hero controllers from the xbox, since they use a usb dongle to get their wireless functions.

You can check out a partial songlist for Heavenly Harmony Gold here , and they promise that in addition to adding full instrument compatibility for tracks from previous releases(backwards compatibility!), they have an all new game coming out in 2009!  This is an exciting year for Christian video games!

Year in Review -REDUX

We switched back to our old podcast host, the non-free but reliable Libsyn. So we're back up. Our Christmas episodes are missing at the moment, but they will gradually be added again. Expect updates when they go live.

This week we have our 2008 Year in review Spectacular! We cover our favorite movies from this past year's podcasts, our favorite movies overall, video games, comics, books. Even a touch on music.
But just a touch, or else Don would put us over the 3 hour mark.

SuperCandid Books: "Beyond Bella: The Amazing Stories of Bella and the Lives it's Changed"

Bella, one of our favorite movies we reviewed this year, has a companion book that has  been out for a couple months but just came to my attention.  Behind Bella, is half-making of, half-inspiring stories.  It seems that author Tim Drake(who is not, it should be clear, the 3rd Robin), who's previous works have been mainly Catholic-related self-help and children's books, was not satisfied in just writing about the making of the film.  He also chronicled stories of people who's lives have been changed by the positive message of Bella, as well as the story of actor Eduardo Verastegui and his calling to use his acting and filmmaking for a higher calling than just success.

Although a cynical mind might scoff at people changing their lives based on a movie, Bella is moving enough and good enough that it doesn't seem so silly.

2009 Christian Filmmakers Academy kicks off today

This week over 700 students will be attending the Christian Filmmaker's Academy at Doug Phillip's Vision Forum-run San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival.

These filmmakers will be learning all sorts of things about the movie business and the art of movie-making, but what I'm sure many of them really want to know is:  how do we wing $101,000 for our home-made movie?

That answer will be given later this week when the Film Festival awards its grand prize.  We already covered the nominees; who's your money on?  Lets hear your predictions!

My money is on Fireproof , if only because its the Titanic of Independent Christian Films.  It's already made gobs of money, a bunch of awards would be the perfect companion.

One of the reasons that The SuperCandid Podcast has been out of commission for the past couple weeks is that our podcast hosting service, podango.com, has gone under.  We are trying to find a new hosting solution, but until then please keep our show in your prayers and check out older episodes at our previous host, which we may end up going back to, SuperCandid @ Libsyn.
